SOME SELECTED THEOLOGICAL WORKS: A TRIBUTE TO JAMES INELL PACKER

by C. Berry Driver, Jr.

Regent College reports about its faculty member: "James I. Packer is one of the preeminent evangelical theologians today who, in addition to his work at Regent College writes books, serves as a Senior Editor and Visiting Scholar of Christianity Today and contributes to a variety of theological journals. In 1979, after teaching and preaching for 27 years in England, he became Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology at Regent College, and in 1989 he was installed as the first Sangwoo Youtong Chee Professor of Theology. In 1996 he became Board of Governors Professor of Theology. Dr. Packer is married with three children and enjoys tapping his foot to classic jazz."

Many years ago I read a powerful inspirational work titled Holiness: Its Nature, Hindrances, Difficulties, and Roots by the Anglican bishop, J. C. Ryle [BT767 .R9], a must read on the doctrine of sanctification. As superbly practical as the work itself was, the introductory essay by James Inell Packer (b. 1926), also an Anglican, touched a vital chord in my own young Christian experience. The author of this essay shared with me his own struggle in overcoming some well-intentioned and popular teaching that still proves ineffectual in its ability to deal with the root of the serious problem facing all Christians, even long after their conversions--the doctrine of indwelling sin. Now, here was a British theologian with whom I could relate!

Similarly, J. I. Packer, experienced regeneration while a young man, entering the ranks of evangelical Christians in the popular English Keswick conception of holiness. For so long he strove under the great duress of seeking earnestly to empty himself of the sinful urges that always seemed to keep him off balance. He remained in emotional turmoil. The excruciating anxiety that he experienced each time that he tried "to let go and let God" take over his life always left him short of joy and bereft of peace with God.

Being of "a bookish sort," Packer happened across the works of the former Chancellor of Oxford during Oliver Cromwell's Protectorate, Dr. John Owen. It was Owen's work, Sin and Temptation: The Challenge to Personal Godliness [BT715 .0932 1983], another must read, that opened a window to Packer's soul, causing the light of the Scriptures to flood the plane of his heretofore vanquished spirituality. Thus began his love for the Puritans and their doctrines of grace, a theology that sustained these mighty stalwarts for the Christian faith during the formative yet perilous period of the English Reformation. Here was the substance, nourishment and spiritual pith for which he had so longed!

Soon Packer realized that his vital union with Christ was not to be maintained via a subjective mind game, cemented by his own personal faith initiative and striving toward obedience to external laws imposed upon himself. Rather, he discovered that his regeneration by the Holy Spirit was a mighty act of God purposed before the very origin of the cosmos in the secret councils of the Trinity and carried out in history by Christ's theanthropic Incarnation, sinless life, vicarious atonement, and triumphant resurrection. His right standing with God in Christ was the result of an objective righteousness outside of himself but which brought an inner wholeness to his soul and, most importantly, right standing, peace and reconciliation with his Creator. Further, God had not left him comfortless, but had enabled him, by the Savior's ascension and session to experience moment by moment union with Christ and bold access to the Father. In a word, he experienced the illuminating light of the Holy Spirit shining into the very psychology of his soul, resulting in a godly wisdom that provided honest answers to his questions about the real struggles of Christians living in a fallen world. There was now hope in the midst of Packer's struggle for purity in the Christian life. Spiritual/doctrinal formation became a reality for him, as he was delivered into the apostolical mold so desperately needed by young, growing disciples (Romans 6:17-18).

Many in this and in the preceding generation have benefitted by Packer's theological pilgrimage. As one who has read widely and dug deeply, supplied rich anthologies of the writings of the Puritans, and "predigested" for us the Elizabethan language of their theological content, Packer has spread a delicious table for today's theological students. He was educated at Oxford University, served as assistant minister of St. John's Church, Senior Tutor and Principal at Tyndale Hall, in Great Britain, and is currently Sangwoo Youtong Chee Professor of Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, and serves as a contributing editor to Christianity Today. A number of interesting subjects intrigue this quiet English theologian, including a fascination with British steam locomotives!

It is the intent, therefore, of this writer to put forth a brief, annotated bibliography of salient works for those seeking an evangelically sound introduction to theological studies. J. I. Packer offers a mine of spiritual wealth for those who will take the time to lay such a sound foundation in their lives. This relation is not intended by the author to be exhaustive, but merely introductory and suggestive, and a well-deserved tribute to a humble servant of God. Works that may be purchased or charged from Roberts Library are the focus of this paper. Call numbers of works mentioned, if available among Roberts Library holdings, are included throughout the text.

Besides Packer's own works, several of which are treated below, Packer penned a number of introductory essays and signed authors that are often, to this reviewer, worth the price of the books which they introduce! For example, in 1957, J. I. Packer assisted O. R. Johnson in providing to a wider reading public Martin Luther on The Bondage of the Will: A New Translation of De Servo Arbitrio (1525), Martin Luther's Reply to Erasmus of Rotterdam, Published by James Clark & Co. Ltd. in Britain and released in the States by Fleming H. Revell Company [BJ1460 .L8]. The "Historical and Theological Introduction," comprising pages 13-61, is so very fine and makes the reader of Luther's The Bondage of the Will aware of the importance of this grand theological work for contemporary readers. Not only is the translation of De Servo Arbitrio lucid and dynamic in its own right, but Packer also makes it clear that this was probably Luther's magnum opus, serving as a necessary fusillade against the errant Roman Catholic view of congruent merit of souls. Coupled with John Calvin's A Reformation Debate: Sadoleto's Letter to the Genevan's and Calvin's Reply [BR301 .C3 1966], a clarion heralding of the apostolic doctrine of justification by faith alone, through grace alone, in the merit of Christ alone, the pastor/theologian has in his hands an unequaled theological double-edged sword from the Protestant Reformation.

When you instruct in the doctrine of justification by faith, be certain to read Packer's fine treatment of the same in the New Bible Dictionary, 3rd edition [BS440 .N42 1991]. Also, in the face of much contemporary epistemological and methodological erosion, please digest the first chapter by Packer, "Is Systematic Theology a Mirage? An Introductory Discussion" in Doing Theology in Today's World: Essays in Honor of Kenneth S. Kantzer, edited by John Woodbridge and Thomas Edward Montgomery, Zondervan, 1991, pp. 17-37 [BR118 .D625 1991].

A beginning primer for the aspiring biblical theologian should be J. I. Packer's Knowing God [BT102 .P26 1973]. For someone who "cut his teeth" as a religion major at university with Gabriel Marcel, Gerardus Van der Leeuw and Paul Tillich, I found this work refreshing beyond description! Here is Bible doctrine experiential, practical, and foundational. A helpful study guide soon appeared after the book's reception soared (1975). A twentieth anniversary commemorative edition was distributed in 1995. Packer urges the study of God by using the decalogue as the point of departure. I highly recommend this work for new disciples of Christ, along with John R. W. Stott's Basic Christianity, InterVarsity Press, 1971 [BT77 .S74]. In 1993, and revised in 1994, came Packer's brief text, similar to Stott's approach, Concise Theology: a Guide to Historic Christian Beliefs. God's Words: Studies in Key Bible Themes, 1981 [BS543 .P28], a thematic study offering briefer and more diverse theme studies than Leon Morris's fine old work, The Apostolic Preaching of the Cross [BS2385 .M63].

Christian apologetics are treated by Packer in Christianity: The True Humanism [BV3793 .P32], published in 1985 by Word Publishers, Waco, Texas. An old work, written in response to the "Death of God" movement (ca. 1963) was Keep Yourself from Idols [BT55 .R63 P3 1963], and is still worth consulting.

A vital work that I recommend on pneumatology is Packer's Keep in Step with the Spirit [BT121 .P32 1984]. For those who have opted for the superspirituality of neo-Pentecostalism, this work just may provide a cure. While upholding vital Christian experiences for all believers, and encouraging an enriching study of sanctification through the power of God the Holy Spirit, I rank this work for it's practical import with J. C. Ryle's Holiness, mentioned above. See also Packer's Rediscovering Holiness, published in 1992 by Vine Books [BT767 .P23].

Are you troubled by the tension between God's sovereignty and man's responsibility in personal and church evangelism? By all means, then, read carefully Packer's cogent study titled Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God [BV3793 .P32]. Many a theology and evangelism professor in evangelical colleges and seminaries across America and around the world have used this book. Packer asserts that this grand tension is much more that a mere paradox--it is a grand antinomy, involving truths hidden in the secret counsels of the Triune Godhead. Packer defines antinomy as an apparent contradiction between two statements, both apparently obtained by correct reasoning; therefore, both predestination and free will must be examined in the light of God's infinitely sovereign purpose, far beyond the poor limited rational powers of finite human beings.

One of my favorite and relatively recent works by J. I. Packer, A Quest for Godliness: The Puritan Vision of the Christian Life [BX9322 .P33 1990], published in 1990 by Crossway Books. So impressed was I with this work when it first appeared that I used it as a supplemental textbook for M.Div. students in Systematic Theology II, when examining the doctrine of sanctification. This descriptive anthology of Puritan spirituality opens for this generation, near the beginning of the twenty-first century, a well-spring of personal godliness and practical pastoral theology. The stereotypical view of stolid Puritans with blunderbusses on shoulders, marching on their way to burn witches in Salem is swept away; and they not only receive "good press," but these stalwarts of the English Reformation are cast in an objective light which they richly deserve. Before one undertakes reading Richard Baxter, John Owen, John Bunyan, William Perkins, et al., this reviewer suggests an initial reading of this highly informative introduction. Packer instructs the reader in the what, how, and why of reading the biblically-rooted Puritans. A year later, Packer released through Kingsway Press Among God's Giants: Aspects of Puritan Christianity (1991). Packer also recommends a masterful treatment of the nature of indwelling sin and the believer's sure remedy in Christ--mortification of sin in the Christian's life. John Owen's Sin and Temptation is well worth careful study and has been published as a smaller, separated volume, apart from the multi-volume The Works of John Owen, published by Banner of Truth Trust. An edition published by Multnomah Press bears another of Packer's helpful theological essays, where he offers practical advice on the use of Owen's material on sin and temptation.

Finally, let me mention another one of Dr. Packer's fine introductions to a great theological works his "Introductory Essay to John's Owen's Death of Death in the Death of Christ" (Volume 10 of Owen's Works) [BT 775 .O9 1985]. Like Machen's Christianity and Liberalism, this little essay has never been answered by its detractors. With polemical authority Dr. Packer upholds the teaching of "particular redemption" (so-called "limited atonement"). If you ever locate this little essay, published in several separate printings, by all means purchase it and read and study it carefully. It's a gem of a theological work. While later published separately by several firms, the work may also be read as Chapter 8 in A Quest for Godliness: The Puritan Vision of the Christian Life. (More will be said about this work later.) In my opinion, this defense of Particular Redemption through Christ's Atonement has never been answered by the critics of Limited Atonement; like trying to paddle up Niagra Falls, the torrent of Packer's compelling theological argument is so clear and forceful!

In conclusion, this tribute to the writings of Packer was not intended to be exhaustive but suggestive, not a final word on theological reading but helpful toward a theocentric and christological foundation for pastors and biblical scholars. I searched recently while in Great Britain at the library of Packer's alma mater, Oxford's Bodleian library, and found some British titles unavailable in many theological libraries in this country; but I must say that our Robert's Library catalog lists fifty-five titles among its holdings, plus numerous journal articles, signed dictionary, and encyclopedic articles. In addition, many popular articles, some treating controversial, contemporary issues facing the church at the end of the twentieth century, are found in Christianity Today. If this brief introduction to some of the beneficial works by James Inell Packer brings any benefit to those here at Southwestern Seminary who "hunger and thirst for righteousness," I will certainly be grateful to our Lord Christ.
